about

I am proud to present this live recording from a 2018 New London Drone Orchestra performance at an apartment show in Brooklyn, where an orchestra member had recently moved. As you'll hear on the recording, we welcomed audience participation and even passed out scores. Here's what the first one, for the piece "Herd Immunity," looked like:

|: HHHHHHHHHHHH
EEEEEEEEEEEEE
RRRRRRRRRRRR
DDDDDDDDDDDD :|

!!!!!!!!!!!!! (<3) !!!!!!!!!

Start with literally a giant drone. Play exactly the note everyone else is playing. Drop in and out. Play around with that note in any way you want. Give up hope of playing anything but this note and squeeze everything you can out of it. Kind of like how we’re living now.

Eventually, whenever, according to the command of the group consciousness, the director or a designee will change the tone. Then everybody can solo in their own little world to their heart’s content because we are all free. Free jazz meltdown!

A small contingent of us road tripped down from Connecticut and met up at the Crab Shack with my longtime musical collaborator Darryl Hell, who brought his soundboard, mics, and thundersword, a large percussion instrument of his own invention. Darryl and I both adjusted the mix during the set, and what you hear is a combination of board sound and room sound.

The second piece we played that night was "Passing Shower," a fun concept that's especially great for newcomers (to the group or to improvisation more generally) by member Tim Wolf. You can hear the instructions I gave the audience in the intros to each track.

I love the exuberance of this early and one-time-only lineup. Long live spontaneous group composition and audience participation!
